Dawson Dembroski is a senior at Ashwaubenon High School.

He was a defensive back on this year’s squad that started the season 6-0 and continued its run to the playoffs.

In addition to the gridiron, Dembroski is a standout wrestler in the 152-pound classification.

Individually, he has won more than 90 matches in three years of competition.

Ashwaubenon won seven games and kept its playoff streak alive. Talk about the year.

“It was great. The program changed a ton this year with Coach Ryczkowski coming in as head coach. Our team came together, and that's because we worked out every morning since June preparing for this season. It was also exciting for the community and school our team started 6-0 for the first time in a while.”

What’s your most embarrassing football moment?

“When I fumbled on the 2-yard line my junior year against Green Bay Preble.”

Do you prefer to play on grass or turf?

“Turf.”

What’s the hardest part about dealing with a loss?

“Knowing you gave your all and not coming out with the result you wanted.”

Is it hard for linemen and defensive secondary players to get recognition in lieu of skilled players?

“Not really – football is a team game. When an individual gets recognition, we are happy for them, but we know in the end all that matters is the final score on the board.”

What is a weekend out of season like for you?

“I go to my grandma’s house up north, go fishing with my friends and catch crayfish and I play a lot of basketball in my free time.”

Do you have a nickname or something a teammate calls you during a game?

“Daws. My wrestling coaches started calling me that and it caught on with my teammates and football coaches.”

What is one thing other teammates or coaches don’t know about you?

“My favorite NFL team is the Seattle Seahawks.”

What are your college aspirations?

“I plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.”

A cruise or flying to a destination?

“Flying.”

What are your hobbies?

Fishing, hunting, spikeball, basketball, watching Netflix and YouTube and hanging out with the boys.”

 What four words describe you?

“Tough, funny, athletic, hardworking.”

What is your favorite music genre?

“Country.”

What is one thing you feel should be changed to helmets or football gear to keep you safe?

“There shouldn’t be much changed about the equipment. Rather, kids should be taught to not lead with their heads. That, in turn, could prevent a lot of the injuries that occur in high school, college and the NFL.”

Who is your favorite football player?

“Russell Wilson. As soon as I saw him play at Wisconsin in person, I knew he was my favorite player. I have been a Wilson fan since college and his rookie season.”

What are three things you’re looking forward to as a senior at Ashwaubenon?

“The rest of the wrestling season, AP psychology with Mr. DeCleene and accounting with Mr. Lindauer.”

What is your favorite in-season activity to attend with friends?

“Watching the Badgers’ games with my teammates on Saturdays after our game on Friday nights.”

What other sport do you think you could have excelled in?

“Basketball.”
