Bellin, Gundersen merger announced
GREEN BAY – Bellin Health (headquartered in Green Bay) and Gundersen Health System (headquartered in La Crosse) announced they are deep into discussions of a planned merger, with a final agreement expected in the coming weeks, followed by required regulatory review.
Officials from both networks said the planned merger would provide patients and communities access to care at 11 hospitals and more than 100 local clinic locations.
“As health systems, our missions, visions and values complement each other, and the people and communities we serve are at the core of the care and service we provide,” Bellin Health president and CEO Chris Woleske said.
Donuts Do Good
BROWN COUNTY – Started by the Salvation Army on the first Friday in June in 1938, National Donut Day was created to honor the Donut Lassies who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines during World War I.
Again this year, the Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay and Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe are teaming up to hand out original wartime recipe donuts from 7-10 a.m Friday, June 3, to honor the Donut Lassies.
Donuts will be available at all three Uncle Mike locations while supplies last.
For every dozen donuts sold June 3, Uncle Mike’s will donate $2 to the Salvation Army.
The recognition extends to Saturday, June 4, for the first annual sold-out Donut 5K at 8 a.m. at Green Isle Park.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Salvation Army Kroc Center Scholarship Fund.
City Hall summer hours
GREEN BAY – City Hall summer hours are now in effect in the City of Green Bay.
Now through Labor Day, City Hall will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Friday.

Woman’s Club scholarships
DE PERE –The General Federation of Woman’s Club (GFWC) of De Pere presented $1,000 scholarships to two De Pere area high school seniors based on academic success and leadership skills.
This year’s recipients were Nevaeh Brittnacher from De Pere High School and Lydia Kohlbeck of West De Pere High School.

WEECDA Wisconsin Idea award
GREEN BAY – University of Wisconsin-Green Bay associate professor Lora Warner was recently presented with the Wisconsin Extension Environmental and Community Development (WEECDA) Wisconsin Idea Award.
The award is given to recognize contributions to the UW-Extension educational program as it relates to its mission in community development or natural resources.
UW-Madison Extension and UW-Green Bay formed a partnership to offer resources to nonprofit organizations in Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin.
Chamber adds Schnese as executive assistant
GREEN BAY – Former Green Bay School Board secretary Beth Jones Schnese was recently announced as executive assistant to the Greater Green Bay Chamber president and CEO Laurie Radke.
Schnese will be responsible for working directly with the Chamber’s Board of Directors, members and investors.
She’ll also serve on the leadership team, manage special projects and serve as lead for the Chamber’s client relationship management system.
Schnese graduated from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.
“I’m honored to join the Chamber and am excited to help uphold their mission of enhancing economic and workforce development for their members,” Schnese said.
Golf event raises thousands for Ukraine
DE PERE – Organizers of the Hilly Haven’s Big Cup, aimed at supporting Ukraine, said it was a huge success.
The event raised $33,233, which will go towards medical, military and humanitarian needs in Ukraine.
Registration open for stair climb
GREEN BAY – Registration for the 10th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, co-sponsored by the Green Bay Metro Fire Department and Pierce Manufacturing, is officially open.
This year’s climb will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10, and will honor and recognize the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
All funds raised will directly benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).
Participants can see additional details and pre-register at piercemfg.com/climb.
Organizers said last year’s record attendance exceeded 2,800 and raised more than $180,000.
“Now more than 20 years after 9/11, it remains a moment forever etched in our memories and our annual memorial stair climb is just a small way to honor the members of the fire service who were lost that day,” Chief David Litton said.
Event registration is $35 per climber through July 8, $40 per climber July 9-Aug. 26 and $45 per person through the day of the climb.
Grant submission deadline approaching
BROWN COUNTY – The Brown County Crime Prevention Foundation grant request submission deadline is June 30.
Qualified applicants for the grant include non-profit organizations, government agencies, schools and school districts in Brown County.
The program or project must aim to reduce or eliminate at least one of the following elements:
• Desire to commit a crime.
• Ability to commit a crime.
• Opportunity to commit a crime.

Grant recipients will be announced in August.
Boosters offered for ages 5-11
BROWN COUNTY – Bellin Health is now offering Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots to individuals ages 5 years and up at all Bellin vaccination locations.
The move comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently expanded the eligibility of booster doses to those ages 5-11.

Popkey named to New North board
NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Aaron Popkey, the director of public affairs for the Green Bay Packers, was recently named as one of the newest members of the New North, Inc. board of directors.
In his role with the Packers, Popkey serves as the organization’s primary liaison with federal, state and local government and civic bodies, and oversees external communications for all non-football departments.
New North, Inc. is a regional nonprofit economic development corporation that fosters collaboration among private and public sector leaders throughout the 18 counties of Northeast Wisconsin, known as the New North region.
Structure fire causes $100,000 in damage
DE PERE – De Pere Fire Rescue units were dispatched to 2348 Indy Court in the City of De Pere for a report of a structure fire May 26.
Battalion Chief Brett Jansen said fire crews entered the structure and extinguished the fire within minutes of arrival and were able to contain the fire to the kitchen, however, the home incurred heavy smoke damage due to the fire, estimated at $100,000 worth.
No injuries were reported during the incident, however, three family pets died due to heavy smoke conditions.
Jensen said De Pere Fire Rescue had two engines, one ladder, one command vehicle and 15 firefighters on the scene.
Additional fire units from Hobart-Lawrence, Ashwaubenon and County Rescue also assisted.
The fire remains under investigation with the cause undetermined at this point.
Wild Wednesdays return to NEW Zoo
SUAMICO – Wild Wednesdays are back at the NEW Zoo and Adventure park for the summer season.
Admission is free from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesdays in June, July and August.
The discount is only valid for at-the-door admission, and not online advanced admission.
Green Bay school district authorized to implement SBL
GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) has been authorized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to implement the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (SBL) – joining just 13 other districts in the state to be able to do so.
The SBL is a state-approved student credential that recognizes graduating high school students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more additional languages.
Students who qualify receive a digital certificate specifying the level of proficiency attained.
In addition, the SBL credential is included on a GBAPS student’s high school transcript
