Lung - The Swankeeper

Feel It Records: 13 out of 13 rating

Posted

Lung is a duo from Cincinnati, Ohio, composed of Kate Wakefield on cello and vocals and Daisy Caplan on drums.

Lung are veterans to the Northeast Wisconsin music scene via appearances at Mile of Music and the GBUFO Invasion Fest and recently returned to Green Bay to play at the Green Bay UFO Museum Gift Shop and Records.

Lung fans were in store for a number of treats.

First treat, Lung was performing music from The Swankeeper six days before its official release.

Second treat, Lung had just gotten the vinyl and compact disc of The Swankeeper and was selling it early to fans.

Third treat, Lung once again delivered a stunning jaws on the floor performance that goes a long way to cause you to enlist in the Lung National Guard.

Lung played before a packed GBUFO of fans who came out on Memorial Day weekend.

In the 39 years I have been setting up shows, I have realized that is not always the best weekend to set up a show in Green Bay and expect a great turnout, so that made the night extra special.

Fourth treat, Bob Piggins from Chicago/Milwaukee took the time out from their Memorial Day weekend activities to jump on this bill.

Bob Piggins, like Lung, also put on a stellar performance last summer at the GBUFO Invasion Fest 2024.

Last time Bob Piggins played the GBUFO, we still have spirits from attendees dancing in corners of the GBUFO on random Saturday evenings when the sky is overcast and the wind is howling.

Bob Piggins once again created memorable and ghostly music.

If you hadn’t noticed, this record review is also now officially a show review.

Fifth treat, Age of Fable — local Green Bay favorites — opened with a special duo show minus their rhythm section due to a work scheduling conflict.

Age Of Fable were great and got the show off to a fabulous start — I look forward to seeing Age of Fable at full strength.

Sixth treat, those who attended the show got to eat for free the chili I have been working on perfecting the last four months.

I’m happy to report that those who tried it said it was delicious.

Record reviews of bands like Lung are actually pretty hard simply because Lung produces such amazing original music with just drums, cello and vocals.

I’m not sure if my bag of record review clichés has anything left for this review so I guess I’ll make up some new ones.

Lung can come at you softly, but Lung can also come at you with a full frontal bombastic assault.

Lung has beautiful melodies and at times I hear The Beatles or maybe I hear Wings but with Yoko and not Linda and Phil Spector co-producing with Roy Thomas Baker.

I feel if I did a seance of this album my medium would probably accidentally conjure up the musical spirits of Frank Zappa, Kurt Cobain, Maria Callas and Judy Tenuta (it could happen!).

The Swankeeper is great from start to finish and if you want powerful indie-rock with a bold freshness and flavor, this is the album for you.

To complete this album/show review, I’m happy to report this album and performance by Lung got them invited to the GBUFO Invasion Fest 2025.
