ROCKLAND – It’s an event an area 12 year old and his mother will not soon forget.
Drina DuCharme and her son, Emery, were outside their Town of Rockland home last weekend enjoying the spring-like weather when they were drawn to some commotion happening in the wooded area of their backyard.
“Our neighbor’s dog alerted us that there was something in the sump pump drainage area,” Drina said. “Emery and I walked over to see what all the fuss was and that’s when we saw the fawn sinking in the muddy water.”
Drina said as the fawn’s face became submerged, her son and her quickly jumped into action and pulled the tiny deer to safety.
“After a couple of minutes, the fawn got on its legs,” Drina said. “Right away it started following Emery towards the edge of our property – we live on acreage in East De Pere (Town of Rockland).”
Drina said the tiny deer followed her son all the way back to their house and nestled itself under his chair on the porch.
She said they contacted the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, but as they waited to hear back from them, they were able to convince the pint-sized fawn to return to the woods.
“We placed the fawn back near the area where we rescued it,” she said. “We were able to get the fawn to not follow us back to the house – tip-toeing away after several failed attempts.”
She said they checked the spot the next morning and the fawn was gone.
Drina said it is a memory she and her son will never forget.
“I thought that it was a neat experience,” Sixth grader Emery said. “It’s something that you don’t see everyday. I was surprised that the fawn followed me and sat down next to me.”
