Montgomery, Bay Port throttle Manitowoc Lincoln
SUAMICO – The No. 2-seeded Bay Port football team got off to a slow start in its Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 game against No. 7 Manitowoc Lincoln Oct. 22, but it finished in a big way.
After leading only 21-14 near the end of the first half, the Pirates got two touchdowns in 31 seconds on their way to a 56-14 thumping of the Ships.
With the win, Bay Port hosts No. 6 Marquette University Friday, Oct. 29, in a Level 2 game.
Pirates quarterback Cole Bensen hooked up with wide receiver Sam Barry on a 73-yard strike in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead after the Nicholas Fitt extra point.
Bensen then hit running back Blake Buchinger on a 20-yard pass for a score at the beginning of the second quarter to make it 14-0 after the extra point.
After a Manitowoc score, Buchinger added a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:03 remaining in the first half.
The Ships returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
Bay Port running back Tevyn Montgomery scored from eight yards out with 31 seconds remaining for a 28-14 advantage after the extra point.
The Pirates scored 16 seconds later when Ethan Houle scooped up a Ships’ fumble and returned it 15 yards for a score.
Montgomery added three touchdowns in the third quarter – a 70-yard kickoff return and 16- and 1-yard rushing scores – to end the scoring.
Bay Port (9-1) outgained Manitowoc (4-6) in total yardage, 471-124.
Bensen was 8-of-11 passing for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
Montgomery and Buchinger rushed for 102 and 80 yards, respectively.
Barry caught four balls for 146 yards.
Lower-seeded Notre Dame wins on road
APPLETON – The No. 6-seeded Notre Dame Academy football team traveled to No. 3 Fox Valley Lutheran for a WIAA Division 3 game Oct. 22 and came home with a 39-14 victory.
With the win, the Tritons travel to No. 2 Menasha Friday, Oct. 29, for a Level 2 game.
Behind 348 yards rushing and four touchdowns from running back Daniel Hornacek, the Tritons cruised to the victory over the Foxes.
Quarterback Sam Lagowski also added a rushing score and was 4-of-11 passing for 79 yards with an interception.
Wide receiver Keegan King caught two balls for 33 yards to lead Notre Dame.
Ashwaubenon’s upset bid comes up short
LUXEMBURG – Behind 335 yards passing from Ashwaubenon junior quarterback Boone Kirst, the Jaguars were primed for an upset victory over No. 1-seeded Luxemburg-Casco Oct. 22 in a WIAA Division 3 game.
In the end, the Spartans prevailed over the No. 8 Jaguars, 40-34.
Kirst was 24-of-37 passing and had three touchdowns.
Ashwaubenon running back Andrew Pludeman rushed for 108 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown.
Jaguars wide receivers Rhett Jonas (seven receptions) and Caden Van Duyse (nine receptions) had 140 and 89 yards receiving, respectively.
