Lasecki gets a pair of seconds at state

MADISON – The future looks mighty bright for Bay Port swimmer Emma Lasecki.

The sophomore on the girls swimming team came home with a pair of runner-up finishes at the WIAA D1 state meet on Nov. 11 in Madison.

Lasecki, the Fox River Classic Conference swimmer of the year, finished in a time of 2:02:98 in the 200 IM and 55:12 in the 100 Butterfly to complete her amazing day.

Lasecki came to Madison seeded first in the IM and second in the Fly.

Cedarburg’s Lillie Hosack won the IM with a state-record swim of 1:58:13, while sophomore Gabriela Pierobon-Mays from Middleton nipped Lasecki by less than a tenth of a second in the Fly. Of the top-five finishers in the IM, all were seniors but Lasecki.

Bay Port finished 10th as a team with its 89 points, while Middleton ran away with the title with a 313.50 total.

Diver Brightyn Zuelke - who came into the state meet seeded 11th - dove her way to an eighth-place total of 425.85. Neenah’s Av Osero won the meet by scoring 511.50 points.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Riley Melendy, Erin Samels, Lasecki and Sophia Thibert swam to a third-place in a time of 1:45:32, while Melendy placed 13th in the 200 IM (2:09:95).

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Samels, Shae Gustafson, Emily Zimmer and Lacy Geurts finished 22nd (1:42:23) after qualifying 24th.

Melendy was 17th in the 100 Backstroke (59:46) and Samels finished 11th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05:62).

Lastly, the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Melendy, Thibert, Gustafson and Lasecki took home a 16th place with a time of 3:38:03.

Zuelke, Samels and Thibert are all seniors, while Melendy and Zimmer are juniors. Gustafson is a sophomore and Geurts is just a freshman.
