ASHWAUBENON – Bay Port quarterback Isaac Krause isn’t really known for his running skills, but he showed he’s pretty good at that, too.

Krause rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns in the Pirates 48-21 Fox River Classic Conference victory over Ashwaubenon last night at Goelz Field.

Krause also added two passing TDs as No. 4 ranked Bay Port amassed a whopping 576 total yards in offense and improved to 4-0 overall.

“In practice we always work on the run, since we are primarily a running team,” said Krause, who was 8-of-15 passing for 120 yards. “The first three games I really never got to showcase (my running) because we really never had to.”

The Pirates began the season with three straight blowout wins over Sheboygan North, Sheboygan South and Manitowoc, where they averaged 60 points a game.

Jacob Calawerts also had a huge day for Bay Port, as he rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries. Calawerts, who came into the game with 204 yards on the ground in the first three games, rushed for over that much in the first half alone against the Jaguars (1-3).

“It was great to get in the mode,” said Calawerts, who played sparingly in the second half after developing cramps. “The coaches saw something that they liked and we just stayed true to running the ball throughout the whole game. My offensive line was fantastic blocking for me and it was just great to get running out there.”

Jacob Calawerts rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries.

Isaiah Gash added 78 yards on the ground in helping the Pirates to 456 rushing yards total.

It looked like the game would be over early after Bay Port jumped out to a 28-0 lead halfway through the second quarter. Krause threw touchdown passes to Iowa recruit Jack Plumb (5 yards) and Cordell Tinch (61 yards) in the first quarter, before Ryan Smith and Calawerts added short rushing TDs in the second.

Plumb would leave later in the game with a lower leg injury, while Tinch's catch capped a 94-yard drive in which the Pirates needed just six plays and 2:55 to score.

The Jaguars struck twice in a 4 1/2 minute span late in the half to gain some momentum going into the break.

“Obviously we got off to a fast start there,” said Bay Port head coach Gary Westerman, who finally got a win as head coach playing at Ashwaubenon after three tries. “I thought we were playing well on both sides of the ball, but then we gave them a big play on offense and then a good kick return. Now all of a sudden it’s 28-14.”

The Jaguars then scored early in the second half when Alex Stanko rumbled 78 yards for a score to make it 28-21. After a three and out by the Pirates, the defense helped turn the momentum by forcing an Ashwaubenon punt.

“That was a huge moment in the game,” Westerman said. “Ashwaubenon had all the momentum at that point, but our defense came up with a big stop to move it back our way.”

Nine plays after the punt, Krause restored order for Bay Port with the first of his rushing touchdowns (13 yards) to make it 35-21 late in the third quarter.

Krause then added TDs from 28 and 76 yards to close the scoring in the fourth.

“Quite honestly, we didn’t run much of what we practiced all week leading up to the game because of what they were doing on defense,” added Westerman. “We adjusted in-game and the kids were really resilient. We had like five injuries and a bunch of guys had to step up.”

Sophomore Max Meeuwsen had three sacks.

The most concerning of those injuries could be to Plumb and defensive back Alec Nagel. At one point, Tinch was on the field in place of Nagel in the Pirates' secondary. Bay Port finished the game with five sophomores playing on offense and defense. Westerman had no update on any of the injuries after the game.

The defense held the Jaguars to 273 total yards of offense, while Matt Barnard had a fumble recovery and sophomore Max Meeuwsen had three sacks.

The Pirates had over twice as many first downs (18-8) and held on to the ball nearly twice as long (31:26 to 16:34).

Stanko finished with 208 yards rushing and averaged almost 15 yards per carry.

Notes: Bay Port will host Pulaski (2-2) next Friday, September 15, who was a 24-21 loser to Notre Dame in week four after the Tritons kicked a field goal in the last few seconds of the game... the Pirates have now won 13 straight FRCC games, which is just four shy of Ashwaubenon's league-record 17-game streak.
