GREEN BAY – The Green Bay women's basketball team dominated in a 70-47 win over the Detroit Mercy Titans at the Kress Center.
There was another historic anecdote left on Carol's Court Thursday night, as Jasmine Kondrakiewicz became the 40th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Phoenix (14-5, 7-1 HL) had four players score double figures, paced by Kondrakiewicz's 17 points. Cassie Schiltz added 16, while Callie Genke and Natalie McNeal had a dozen apiece. Jenna Guyer chipped in with a quick six points in 11 minutes off the bench.
Detroit Mercy (11-5, 5-3 HL) had a team-best 15 points from Emaia O'Brien.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The squads went toe-to-toe for the most part in the opening frame. Green Bay faced a 12-6 deficit with 4:45 left in the first quarter, but quickly cut it back to a one-point game on a Genke layup to make it 14-13 with 2:13 to go. A free throw by Bailey Butler put the Phoenix up 17-16 after the first stanza, in which Green Bay shot 7-of-14 overall. Green Bay stymied the Titans for just seven points in the second quarter and has solid offensive efforts from Schiltz, Genke, and McNeal. The trio combined for 23 of Green Bay's 36 first-half points and helped the Phoenix command a 36-23 lead at the break.
Both teams struggled in the third quarter. UDM scored 11 points, and Green Bay tallied just eight, shooting 2-of-15 overall and 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Despite the lack of scoring, the Phoenix carried a 10-point advantage going into the fourth quarter. Green Bay exploded in the final stanza, racking up 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Kondrakiewicz scored nine points in the frame, scoring her 1,000th career point on a layup with 4:40 remaining in regulation.
The Phoenix pulled away and cruised to a 70-47 victory.
