Jaguars triumph at WIAA Swimming Sectional

ASHWAUBENON- The Ashwaubenon Jaguar girls swim team came into the Sectional knowing that the Plymouth Panthers would be their biggest competition. The Jaguars put that to rest midway through the event and went onto capture the WIAA Division 2 Sectional by an astounding 89 points!

The team captured seven of the eleven individual events and qualified seven athletes to the State Tournament held next Friday in Madison at the Natatorium.

Coach Jennifer Steffel, “We set the tone early with a win in the 200 Yard Medley relay. I was extremely proud of how the middle portion of the meet went, and it allowed us to breathe a little easier down the stretch.”

Senior Emma Steffel captured the 100 Yard Backstroke by a second over Kohler’s Kara Friske. Steffel kicked it into high gear the final 25 meters to win the race.

In addition, Senior Katherine O’Connell captured the 100 Yard Freestyle, and Freshman Hallory Domnick the 200 and 500-yard Freestyle races.

What was most impressive about the day was the fact that the Jaguars captured all three of the relay races which carry double points at the State Tournament.

Steffel adds, “With such a talented group of swimmers, I knew this day was in them. However, you never know how things will play out. I didn’t talk about winning the sectional to the swimmers before the tournament; just go out and swim your race.”
