ASHWAUBENON – That’s why they play the game.

Those words rang true after the Ashwaubenon boys’ basketball team shocked Green Bay Southwest, 73-67, Jan. 25 in a Fox River Classic Conference game at Ashwaubenon High School.

The Trojans (13-1 overall, 9-1 FRCC) came into the game unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 2, while the Jags (6-8, 4-7) have now won four of their last five.

Christopher Morgan led Ashwaubenon with 16 points, while Kyle Krueger (15), Matt Imig (14) and Marcus Wagner (13) also had strong offensive games.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 13-6 lead behind the strong play of Will Pytleski.

Ashwaubenon battled right back after Marcus Tomashek drained a three and then connected on a rare four-point play after he was fouled on a 26-foot shot.

The Trojans extended their lead back to eight points at 30-22, but the hot shooting of the Jaguars cut the advantage to 37-34 heading into halftime.

Imig carried over his hot shooting for Ashwaubenon to the second half by hitting back-to-back treys to give the Jaguars a 45-44 lead with 10:31 left in the game.

After Carson Landry connected on a free-throw jumper to notch the score at 51, Wagner capitalized on a third-chance opportunity to put Ashwaubenon up 53-51.

It would be a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the evening.

The Jaguars nailed four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
