Posted

SUAMICO – The Howard-Suamico School District (HSSD) Budget Hearing and Annual School District Meeting was held on Sept. 29, prior to the regular board meeting, where the district received good news about the 2025-26 levy rate.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith opened with a State of the District that addressed the district’s points of pride, which included surveys that showed that 98% of district staff agree HSSD is a great place to work and that 84% of seniors agree Bay Port High School provides adequate opportunities to learn about different careers.

Another point of pride was on how the presented budget, which originally predicted a $2.9 million deficit, was now balanced.

Board Treasurer Allan McGuire presented the 2025-26 budget, revealing that HSSD earned a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting and was one of two districts in the state to receive it.

He also revealed that the current tax levy rate was the lowest it had been in the last four school years at $7.69 and was sufficient to pay down additional debt and accommodate future projects.

The budget also includes a 3% wage increase for all staff.

A motion was carried to schedule the next annual meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, in the District Office Community Training Center at 2706 Lineville Road in Suamico.

A motion was carried that the 2025-26 Board of Education officer and director salaries would remain the same as the previous school year, and that per diem would remain at $100.

A motion was carried for a school tax levy against all taxable property within the district in the amount of $39,885,911.
