Hornets see a draw with Ships

GREEN BAY – On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Preble Hornets (9-3-3 overall, 4-1-1 conf.) took on the Manitowoc Lincoln Ships (3-12-1 overall, 2-3-1 conf.) at home, securing a 2-2 draw in a hard-fought battle.

Preble came out strong, retaining possession of the ball for the majority of the first half.

Preble’s Yosef Navvaro ripped a left-footed shot down the middle from the penalty line in 13th min but Manitowoc stayed strong in the net.

Manitowoc Lincoln’s Collin Froehlich found himself on a breakaway but Preble’s Connor Reckinger threw his foot out to quell the attack anc cause a turnover in the 15th minute.

Moments later, Jesus Garnica of Preble sent the ball up to Jordan Goral making a run on the left wing for a cross, but there was no one in the box to receive it in the 27th minute.

In the 33rd minute of the match, the Ships found a way to shift the momentum in their favor and snatched a goal to take the lead when Benji Candelaria crossed the ball in to 12 for a chest into the goal on a run past Preble’s Landon Gauthier.

However, Manitowoc Lincoln’s lead did not last long.

Preble’s Jonathan Mendez found himself on a breakaway down the middle of the field for a near post slot to even the score at 1-1 in the 35th min.

Just two minutes later, the Hornets’ Edwin Santiago got a go-ahead goal with a chip over the Ships’ keeper’s head in the 37th minute to take the 2-1 lead going into the half.

Despite dominating in the second half, the Ships capitalized on one of their few opportunities near the net and were able to knock in an equalizer in the 52nd minute.

In the 70th minute, Mendez rang the crossbar, bringing a spark to the Hornets’ offense.

The Hornets continued to drive at the net and carried several attempts near the goal line in the second half, but nonetheless Manitowoc Lincoln held their line.

The final score of the game remained 2-2.

The Preble Hornets faced the Bay Port Pirates on Thursday, Oct. 10.
