GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Preble boys’ soccer team got an overwhelming performance from its defense Sept. 10.
The result was a 1-0 Fox River Classic Conference victory over De Pere in front of a large parent’s night crowd at Preble High School.
The evening’s first glimpse of a scoring chance came at the 8-minute mark when De Pere’s Jakob Bey collected the ball and found a little daylight on the left side of the Preble defense, only to have a pair of Hornets collapse on him before he could get into scoring position.
“They’re a strong squad,” said Preble head coach Chris Becker about De Pere. “They play very direct, and we haven’t played a team like them yet this season. It took us a while to understand what they were doing and how to handle it.”
The stalemate persisted through the first half of play for a 0-0 halftime read on the scoreboard.
Both teams came out firing to start the second half.
A flurry of corner kicks early on provided for a lot of action in front of the goals, but nothing panned out.
That is, until the 8-minute mark of the half when Preble’s Jackson Schaetz took the ball on the right side of the field and rifled a shot past the De Pere keeper for a 1-0 lead and the only goal of the game.
From there, the Hornets’ defense took over.
More than a couple of times, De Pere’s Kevin Ramirez put himself in good scoring position, only to be swarmed at the last moment by Preble’s fast-moving defense.
“We didn’t give them a lot of great looks,” Becker said after the match. “They put a lot of pressure on us, but they only had one or two really good, quality shots. I think our defense did a good job overall of limiting the number of good shots they were able to get off.”
The Hornets moved to 2-1-1 with the win and will be on the road against Sheboygan South on Thursday.
