GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Southwest High School football team finally got a victory for second-year coach BJ Hill.
After going winless last season, the Trojans opened the 2026 season with a 33-13 nonconference victory over Sheboygan South on Aug. 21 at Southwest High School.
Leading just 12-7 at halftime, the Trojans blew the game open in the second half, led by the bruising running of senior Traevaughn Weaver, who ran for three scores after intermission.
“By no means was it a perfect game for us, but there is a lot of emotion after this win,” Weaver said. “We worked so hard this summer, so it’s great to see all that hard work pay off. I promised my offensive line before that game that if I rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns, I’d take them to Taco Bell for some food. I guess I’ll be taking them to get some tacos.”
The Trojans jumped ahead less than two minutes into the game when Carson Zeuske hauled in a 63-yard TD pass from quarterback Alex Broder.
After South punted on its first possession, Southwest’s Amari Collins took the kick 60 yards to the house for a score, but the TD was wiped out due to a penalty.
“We had a lot of mistakes tonight,” Hill said. “A lot of it was because we weren’t healthy and were cramping up – those are the little things as a coach you have to be prepared for. I’ll be better as a coach next week, too.”
About three minutes into the second quarter, the Redwings again had special teams troubles when a snap sailed over their punter’s head.
The punt was eventually blocked, with Southwest recovering the loose ball in the end zone for a 12-0 lead.
Weaver added a rushing TD in the third quarter and two in the fourth to put the game away.
The Trojans have a chance to go 2-0 on the young season with another nonconference game Aug. 28 at cross-town rival Green Bay East.
“We feel confident with what we can bring to the table,” Hill said. “We hang our hats on our defense, and I think they played well tonight. I’m looking forward to the matchup against East.”
