Green Bay police ceremony honors officers

GREEN BAY – Those who lost their lives in the line of duty were honored Tuesday, May 17, in front of the Green Bay Police Department.

Officers and community members held a Police Officer Memorial Ceremony as part of Police Week to commemorate all local, state and federal police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities.

“In our nation’s capital, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial lists the name of every officer in our history to lose their lives in the line of duty,” Police Chief Chris Davis said. “To the families and friends of the officers, deputies, troopers and other police professionals whose names are on that wall, thank you. Please know that we will never forget them. Words can never express our gratitude for their sacrifice and for yours.”

Just one Green Bay officer has died in the line of duty.

Officer George Antone Motquin was killed by a drunk driver as he walked home from his beat in 1951.

The ceremony included a rifle team firing blanks.

The department, in partnership with Green Bay Metro Fire, also held a blood drive during the week.

K9 Memorial

The department took time Monday, May 16, to dedicate its K9 Memorial, located outside the police station.

The memorial honors all current and past K9s and their handlers.

The department said it will continue to add to the memorial as future K9s join the department.

Since the canine unit started in 1986, the police department has utilized 26 dogs.

The five currently active dual-purpose K9s are Pyro, Puma, Drago, Roco and Bose.
