This week's event roundup features numerous stand-up comics and opportunities to honor local veterans

Laughs on Broadway

Friday, Nov. 12

Overtime Grill and Pub, Green Bay

Green Bay Comedy Connection presents its first-ever Laughs on Broadway event, hosted by local comedian Kaleb Robertson with Compassionate Home Health Care Inc.

The night will include performances from Jim Schartzbauer, Ray Roberts, Mike Champeau, Kyle Kubitz and Hayden Fredriksen.

Compassionate Home Health Care Inc will be there with its Holiday Giving Campaign. The organization is in need of personal care, hygiene items and cleaning supplies donations for community members who are in need.
Attendees who bring five donations will be entered into a gift basket raffle.

If you bring 5 donations you will receive a ticket for a chance to win a gift basket. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

Jim Gaffigan at the Resch Center

Stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan will be stopping at the Resch Center on “The Fun Tour.”

Gaffigan is a six-time nominated comedian as well as an actor, writer and producer. Gaffigan is the author of “When Life Gives You Pears,” “Dad is Fat” and “Food: A Love Story.”

He is known for his comedy series inspired by real-life struggles in “The Jim Gaffigan Show.”

He recently released his 8th stand-up special “The Pale Tourist” on Amazon and is the first comedian to reach one billion streams on Pandora.

Gaffigan will bring his authentic comedy style and all-new material to a Green Bay audience.

Jo Dee Messina at The Meyer

Meyer Theatre, Green Bay

o Dee Messina is a seasoned veteran in the country music industry, creating music since 1996, with six complete albums. Messina has been honored by the ACM Awards, CMA Awards and the Grammy Awards, with over five million albums sold worldwide.

In 2013 she left her record label and founded Dreambound Records after starting a Kickstarter campaign.

Country music artist Derek Jones will be opening for Messina at The Meyer. He has toured with Billy Ray Cyrus for four years and has shared stages with Charlie Daniels, Trace Adkins, Shooter Jennings and more.

Jones’ debut album “Derek Jones” came out in 2015. His most recent EP, “Last of a Dying Breed,” was released in March of this year.

Ninth Annual Ruck for Veterans

Saturday, Nov. 13
KI Convention Center, Green Bay

On Saturday, hundreds of people in the community will be marching to show support for veterans suffering with PTSD.

The 4th annual ruck for veterans is hosted by Helping Out Our American Heroes (HOOAH), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of Green Bay’s military community and that hosts the Veteran Suicide Awareness Ruck every year. The event draws in about 1,000 veterans, active duty service members, and civilians annually.

100% of the funds that are raised will go to programs that help local veterans with their physical, mental, financial needs and more.

There is a 2-mile ruck (and a 20-mile ruck, both starting at the KI Convention Center.

The ruck begins at 9 am. Registration starts at 6 am. For more information, head to www.hooahwi.org.

AVB Community Band Concert

Monday, Nov. 15
Meyer Theatre, Green Bay

AVB Community Band (formerly the Allouez Village Band) will be honoring America’s veterans at their concert on Monday with the theme of “United We Stand.”

The 75-member group will be conducted by AVB Associate Director Paul Oleksy. The band will play an array of music selections such as “Freedom” by Michael W. Smith, “Valor” by James Barnes and “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

The American Legion Post 11 of Green Bay will end the night with the retiring of the colors.

The family-friendly concert is free of charge, but donations are encouraged. The concert starts at 7 pm. For more information visit www.avbcommunityband.org.

No Reservations with Dr. Jason Cowell

Thursday, Nov. 18
The Weidner Center, Green Bay

UW-Green Bay Professor and Vice-Chair of Psychology Dr. Jason Cowell has a Ph. D and an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, as well as a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas.

In “Emotion or Action? Cultural Differences in Parental Socialization of the Moral Brain,” Dr. Cowell will dive into the complexity of a person’s upbringing, culture and evolution. Joined by Dr. Senzaki, an associate professor at UW-Green Bay, the two will delve into their ongoing research collaboration where they explore how both parenting and culture influence children’s moral brains.

There will be a live Q&A after the event.
