GBAPS lays out process for filling board vacancy

Posted

GREEN BAY – During the May 19 Green Bay Area Public Schools (GBAPS) Board of Education meeting, Board President James Lyerly laid out the process for filling the current board member vacancy.

On May 8, GBAPS Board Member Kou Lee announced his resignation.

Lee was elected for a three-year term in April 2024.

The appointed candidate will continue that term through April 2026, when the seat is filled through election.

“So today is May 19. On May 20, we will post a notice for the vacancy, and it'll be available on our website, official newspaper, social media, text messages, emails. We'll socialize it with community organizations, and there's a window that will receive applications between May 20 through June 3,” Lyerly explained.

“So anyone that's interested in being on the board will submit an application, resume, cover letter. Think of it as a job application, and at the same time, in parallel with that, board members [will] have access to some questions that will be part of an interview process.

“We have until June 3 to provide any edits or comments and make changes to those questions. As we go through this, we will screen applicants based on their submitted applications on June 9 in a special board meeting, after the work session.

“What we'll do is we'll take the current number of applicants, and we'll take it down to an interview panel and the number of candidates that we want to Interview, and the interviews will be on June 16. The interested candidates that are successful in getting an interview slot will be provided the questions in advance and will set an interview with us.”

The board is scheduled to make the selection on June 16 as well.

Their first official board meeting will be July 14, due to state law which requires a 14-day waiting period to take the oath of office.

In this case, state policy dictates that the selected member take the oath no sooner than June 30.

No vote was taken, as the item was for procedural discussion only.
