GREEN BAY – The losing streak is no more.
Helped by a big eighth inning, the Green Bay Bullfrogs ended an eight-game losing skid with a 9-6 victory over the Kalamazoo Growlers July 7 at Joannes Stadium in Northwoods League action.
Tied at five entering the bottom of the eighth, the ‘Frogs (13-27 overall, 1-3 second half) tallied four times to beat Kalamazoo (25-14, 1-3) for the first time this season after dropping their first five contests.
Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo (Navarro College) walked to lead off the inning and promptly stole second. That was followed up by a Matthew Acosta (USC) single, which scored Cardoza-Oquendo. Preston Pavlica (Grand Canyon University) walked before Blake Nelson (Michigan) and Riley Mihalik (Rider) reached by a single and walk respectively. Nelson’s single scored Acosta from third. Cooper Morrison then (UC Davis) scored Nelson on a fielder’s choice to end the marathon half inning where eight batters came to the plate.
Green Bay also scored a single run in the third and two each in the fourth and sixth.
Acosta had a pair of hits, while Nelson had two RBI. Acosta and Pavlica each scored a pair of runs.
Starting pitcher Leo Perez (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in his 5.2 innings pitched. Elijah Baez (St. Bonaventure) entered with two outs in the sixth to strand a pair of runners. Baez picked up the win in relief, giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits.
The ‘Frogs were outhit by a 10-8 margin and also committed three errors.
The team is back in action today when they host Fond du Lac in a 1:05 game at Joannes.
