Disaster Recovery Center now open for Brown County and Oneida Nation residents

Posted

BROWN COUNTY – A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is now open in Green Bay to assist individuals with uninsured losses or emergency needs related to the April 13-23 storms and flooding.

At the DRC, residents of Brown County and the Oneida Nation can get help applying for federal assistance, receive updates on their FEMA application for assistance, learn about the appeals process and connect with representatives from county, state and federal agencies.

“It’s been a long time since this area has received this direct federal assistance before — at least 30 years or more since Brown County has seen this funding — so it’s new for a lot of residents,” said Brown County Emergency Management Director Dan Kane. “Folks that have lived here a long time might be hesitant. They’ve never seen of this before… This financial assistance is there for them and we want them to be able to at least reach out and see if they’re eligible. If they are eligible, we want them to be able to claim the max that they can possibly get for this.”

The center, located at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Public Safety Training Center, opened July 20 and will run from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Friday, Aug. 14.

“Not everybody is connected to the digital age and having an on-site resource like this where individuals who don’t know if they actually qualify, this site allows them the capability of coming in and just asking those questions…” said County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “We know that the [flooding] during that period of time in April was devastating to a lot of people here in Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin. This is an opportunity to find out more information in person versus trying to navigate the online portal.”

Residents do not need to go to a DRC to receive FEMA assistance and can apply online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling (800) 621-3362.

Aug. 31 is the deadline to apply for FEMA financial assistance, which may include money for basic home repairs, personal property losses and other uninsured disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical needs and more.
