Delegation brings Sweden to De Pere

Posted

DE PERE – A very busy week is scheduled for five students and two teachers from Åmål, Sweden, as part of the Sister City International program hosted by De Pere.

Activities include visiting De Pere Mayor James Boyd, a tour of Seroogy’s Chocolates, lunch at fast food restaurants, visits to De Pere schools, a high school soccer and football game, Halloween activities, a Lambeau Field tour and more.

Aron Olofsson, 17, is most excited about the tour of Lambeau Field.

“I’ve seen it just a little because American football isn’t the biggest out in Sweden,” Olofsson said.

The Sister Cities International program fosters global partnerships through shared exchanges and initiatives, aiming to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation among cities.

Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, the De Pere and Åmål cities have been partners since 2007.

Over the years, these two cities have collaborated on numerous social and economic projects, benefiting both communities.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Vänern in southern Sweden, the town of Åmål is home to a vibrant community of just over 12,000 residents.

It boasts a rich history and features an array of galleries, parks, and shops.
Lake Vänern is a central part of Åmål, influencing the community wherever you go.

While Lake Vänern almost encircles Åmål, the municipality is dotted with other waterways.

In the summer, the city comes alive as locals and visitors arrive by boat to indulge in the inviting beaches, marinas, concerts and scenic walks.

The trip cost for the five students was covered by a scholarship.

“We wrote a letter, like an application letter, and wrote why we wanted to go. And the rule was that we needed to behave well in school,” Olofsson explained.
Olle Loftman described his first impressions of the area, “Lovely people. I’m excited to see just the whole American culture and Lambeau Field. I don’t know a lot about American football. I’d like to get to know it.”

The Sister Cities program is much more than the exchange of students.
