BROWN COUNTY – Both the De Pere and Notre Dame Academy boys’ soccer teams won their Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state semifinal games May 15 but then lost in the finals later in the day.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the WIAA gave schools the option to move their fall sports to the spring, which both De Pere and Notre Dame chose to do.

The No. 3-seeded Redbirds beat No. 2 Waunakee 1-0 in the Division 1 semifinal game at Kewaskum High School on an Andrew Yang goal in the 13th minute.

Yang scored unassisted off a rebounded shot.

Goalie Jack Rosner made four saves in net.

De Pere then lost to No. 1 Appleton North in the finals, 1-0.

North scored in the 15th minute of the game and held on from there.

The No. 3 Tritons beat No. 2 Shorewood 1-0 in overtime in their Division 2 opener at Marian University.

After the teams battled to a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes of play, Notre Dame’s Emmett Lawton scored seven minutes into the first overtime for the only score of the game.

Goalie Maldonado Cendejas was forced to make only three saves in net.

In the title game, the Tritons lost 6-1 to No. 1 McFarland.

McFarland tallied three goals in each half.

Notre Dame’s only score came from Sam Limoni in the 65th minute.

Limoni’s free-kick from 25 yards out found the upper right corner of the net.
