DE PERE — In a rare, Saturday morning dual Dec. 5, the De Pere wrestling team received key falls from Shane Corrigan and Daniel Fernandez in a 36-24 Fox River Classic Conference victory over Ashwaubenon at De Pere High School.
“We have lots of confidence in our guys at those two classifications,” said De Pere head coach Zach Hendzel. “We expect big things out of them. To see them come out in the first match of the season and get falls for us was huge.”
The Redbirds also received four forfeit victories equaling 24 points.
The Jaguars countered with falls at the 152 (Mickey Kiernan) and 285 (Nathan Moynihan) classifications.
The first of two competitive matches featured the 160-pound matchup between De Pere’s Peyton Cappelle and Ashwaubenon’s Mitchell Opperman.
Cappelle took an early 2-0 lead with a takedown, and the two exchanged points through the first two periods.
After the Redbirds wrestler got a point for an escape, the score was deadlocked at 4-4.
However, Opperman got a takedown with 22 seconds left to get the 6-4 decision.
“It was a big win for Mitchell,” said Jody Van Laanen, Ashwaubenon head coach. “He hasn’t had lots of varsity matches, so he did well. He hung in there and got a big three points for us. He showed lots of grit.”
The marquee match featured the Jaguars’ Connor Ramage and De Pere's Michael Alexander.
Both qualified for the 2020 WIAA state tournament in their respective classifications.
Neither wrestler gave an inch through the first four minutes, as the bout remained scoreless.
Ramage picked up a point for an escape to open the third period.
Down the stretch, Alexander did all he could to garner points, but Ramage prevailed with a 3-0 decision.
“It was a great six minutes of wrestling,” Hendzel said. “Michael has come a long way, and there are still things we're working on as a collective unit with each individual wrestler. That Ramage kid is a stud.”
