De Pere artist’s work joins US Coast Guard permanent collection

Posted

A painting inspired by a US Coast Guard Auxiliary Green Bay patrol on the waters of the Bay of Green Bay is now part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s permanent art collection.

The work, titled “Flotilla Green Bay – Semper Paratus,” was created by Dave Ray, an accomplished Wisconsin artist and an official Coast Guard Art Program contributor.

The piece depicts Coast Guard Auxiliary member Ron Nohre from Green Bay Flotilla 47-2, District 9 Western Region, standing resolute on the back deck of a patrol boat.

With dark storm clouds brewing in the distance, the crewman grips a rescue line and ball, his posture calm and prepared symbolizing the Coast Guard motto “Semper Paratus,” meaning “Always Ready.”

Ray, who was embedded with the crew during a patrol as part of his artist duties, captured a moment in his painting that reflects both the professionalism and quiet heroism of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

The image was reviewed by the Salmagundi Excellence Committee and selected Ray’s piece for inclusion in the 2025 Coast Guard Art Program collection.

The painting will debut at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City from July 1 through July 29.

After the Salmagundi exhibit, the full 2025 Coast Guard art collection will move to The Federal Hall National Memorial in New York, where it will remain on display for several months.

Ray is a Wisconsin-based painter known for his maritime and military-themed artwork.

As a Coast Guard Artist, he works to document the missions, people and spirit of the service through visual art.

Ray’s work is regularly featured in exhibitions and permanent collections across the country.
