In August of 2013, hundreds of wonderful people joined the Steinhorst family in accomplishing one of Colton’s bucket list items….a giant water balloon fight. Everybody helped Colton that evening to give him one last memory before going up to heaven on September 3rd, 2013. Four years later, the event has grown beyond just family. It has reached the entire community of Ashwaubenon, NE Wisconsin, and neighboring states. Tara Steinhorst (Colton’s Mom), “The whole event started because Colton loved to make people smile, and to be honest, a water balloon fight does a pretty good job of making people laugh. The event is great because it gives everyone a chance to get away from the distractions we have in everyday life and make some memories.” This year’s event included the big grand pink fire truck from Manitowoc County with thousands of signatures honoring Colton’s memory, a corn hole toss, water balloon fight, raffles, and the release of the green and gold balloons to close the event out.
The foundation started with just a few thousand dollars and now is up over $60,000. It helps provide food and travel to kids with childhood cancer. This year, the Ashwaubenon football team helped the kids enjoy various activities set up on the grounds of Pioneer Park. Tara Steinhorst, “ Our goal is to continue to provide assistance for the growing number of applications that we receive, as well as continue to expand our activities to help children admitted to the hospitals (including holiday bags, wagon donations, and deliveries). If we’ve learned anything, it’s that there aren’t guarantees in life and to be able to appreciate these moments that are truly special!”
