City of Neighborhoods: Mahon Creek

Posted

GREEN BAY – As current president of the Mahon Creek Neighborhood Association (NA), Ted Finco gives a lot of credit to his wife and former president, Rebecca Finco.

The Fincos have been neighborhood residents for the past three and a half years, and Ted took over the presidency in September 2024.

As proof of how invested the Fincos are in their neighborhood, Mahon Creek’s most recent move night was hosted in their own backyard.

The event was Halloween-centric, with a campfire and a showing of Ghostbusters.

The movie night was primarily coordinated by Rebecca, which is one of the many reasons Ted described his wife as the “brains of the operation.”

Ted said that running the NA has always been a group effort, and that the presidency often rotates between the ten-member board.

Despite the larger sized, active board, the Mahon Creek neighborhood is on the smaller side, with 74 houses.

But the NA doesn’t let that stop them, as the Finco’s and their fellow board members have worked on initiatives like Good Neighbor week and neighborhood block parties.

Finco said that one of his favorite projects was a planted pollination garden to decorate the Mahon Creek sign and a “little library,” which is a book-sharing box that is open to the public.

Finco also expressed his gratitude to Green Bay Neighborhoods (GBN) for generously providing Mahon Creek with a mini-grant to help eliminate any invasive species in the neighborhood’s two ponds.

But the most exciting project that Finco shared is still in the works.
“Right when you pull into our neighborhood, we have a huge field that has sat vacant for 20 years,” said Finco.

“When my wife was president, she approached the city to get a park in our area. She got the ball rolling to get a small park there, and we’ve been on the city’s docket for the last two and a half years, and it’s a five year process. But we got on the list, so we’re very close to that happening,” he said.

And until construction begins, Mahon Creek has lots to look forward to.

The NA recently began an annual “turkey trot” Thanksgiving celebration, which included pumpkin pie, coffee and hot chocolate that was donated by a neighborhood resident.

The turkey trot was created by Mahon Creek to be as inclusive as possible, as they create a map of their neighborhood for residents to follow the morning of Thanksgiving.

Mahon Creek also releases two newsletters per year for their residents.

Another avenue that Mahon Creek is interested in exploring, especially as a newer Neighborhood Association, is potential collaborations with other NA’s and GBN as a whole.

Finco specifically shouted out the work done by Randy Griswold and the Fritsch Park NA.

As far as what Finco wishes that residents and community members will take away from the work done by the Mahon Creek NA, he emphasized the importance of relationships between neighbors.

“I think that people need to know how important it is to get to know your neighbors and be involved in getting to know one of these groups. It’s really not a ton of time, and you really get more from it than what you’re putting into it,” Finco said.

“You get to know who your neighbors are, and you watch them grow old, and you watch your kids grow old and you do things together, because these are the people that you see every day and that you’re living next to. I think we all need that fellowship and friendships. There could be a friendship that you don’t even know about until you participate in one of these things. And that’s what we found, that some of our neighbors are our best friends because we’ve done things together and planned things together.”
