ASHWAUBENON — Alec Burns connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning in the Green Bay Booyah's 5-2 victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks July 16.
The Northwoods League game took place at Capital Credit Union Park in Ashwaubenon.
“I was looking for a good pitch to hit, and I happened to get one, which I sent over the wall,” said Burns. “I fell behind in the count, but stuck with it and it paid off.”
Green Bay (8-8) scored its five runs on only six hits.
Garrett Martin picked up the win on the mound, pitching four solid innings, while giving up no runs and striking out eight.
Nate Madej took the loss for the Woodchucks, going six innings and surrendering five runs.
The Woodchucks committed three errors, while outhitting the Booyah on the night.
With Green Bay up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning after Burns' early heroics, a strange sequence of events occurred.
After Stephen Hrustich was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Bo Majkowski singled.
Hrustich and Majkowski each made it home on a throwing error by the Woodchucks' shortstop.
Majkowski was brought back to third base after a lengthy discussion with Wisconsin manager Ronnie Richardson and the lead umpire.
One pitch later, Majkowski scored on an opposite-field groundout by Cameron Tilly to give the home team a 4-0 lead.
Andy Blake hit a solo home run to right field for good insurance in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the margin to 5-0.
After the Woodchucks tallied their first two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning, it was little too late, as Cam Bailey pitched the final three innings for Green Bay, giving up two hits and no runs to pick up the save.
The Booyah will be on the road for four games, July 17-20, against the Rockford Rivets, who currently hold a one-game lead over Green Bay in the Wisconsin-Illinois East Division.
The Booyah will then have their first day off of the season, Tuesday, July 21.
“We play these guys a lot,” added Burns. “We got great pitching tonight from Garrett, Avery and Cam. Every game matters. It’s a grind, and we want to be up at the top by the end of the season.”
