SUAMICO – It wasn’t pretty, but the Bay Port volleyball got another Fox River Classic Conference victory.
The Lady Pirates won their fifth conference match in a row with a 25-21, 25-10, 23-25, 25-11, win over the Pulaski Red Raiders on October 3 at Bay Port High School.
“Overall, we got a conference win, but we didn’t play our best volleyball,” said Bay Port head coach Brendan Baier. “We found a way to win it. We came up with balls when we needed to, but at times we didn’t do a good job of controlling things on our end.
“We just gave away too many points to them and didn’t consistently do a good job on our side of the net. We weren’t real consistent with our passes and finishing offensively. In the back row, we got a little sloppy and lost our composure, especially in game three, but we bounced back nicely in set 4. Our mindset is – win or lose – to get back in the gym the next day and get better.”
The Pirates (20-12 overall, 5-1 FRCC) started off hot in set one behind Maura McGinnity’s seven straight service points to begin. In set two, a 10-3 start once again led to an easy victory for Bay Port. Set three saw the Red Raiders come from behind to win after trailing 18-15. In the final game, the Pirates started and ended strong to win easily – they began the game with an 11-3 burst and ended it with an 8-1 surge.
McGinnity led the Pirates with 42 assists, while Brooke Clement and Olivia Schaut each had 14 kills. Schaut added 6 aces and Mady Schroeder had 19 digs.
