DE PERE – Family Reading Night is quickly becoming a hit at De Pere Middle School.

Principal Adam Kraemer told the Curriculum Committee at the Monday, March 2, meeting the family event is part of the larger Redbirds Read program.

“It really started in about 2017 when Donna Young, who is our library media specialist, went to a conference and it talked a lot about family book clubs and engaging the community into reading with their children,” Kraemer said.

In 2018, the school pushed parents and students to read the book “Refugee” by author Alan Gatz.

He later came in the spring to speak with middle school students.

This year’s book is “Posted” by John David Anderson.

The author Anderson will be in the school Monday, March 9, and he will also present for parents later that night.

The cost for the event is covered by the PTO.

In an effort to make the event more encompassing, Kraemer said Young organized different activities for students in the library to participate in during lunch.

On average, between 50 and 60 students take advantage of this opportunity, he said.

“If you said 10, I would have said it’s a success,” said David Youngquist, school board president. “But when you’re getting 50 to 60 who are engaged, it’s great.”

All parents and guardians of school students are welcome to the event from 6-7:30 p.m. at the De Pere Middle School.

Calendar change

The Personnel Committee looked at a proposed change for the 2020-21 school calendar from teachers.

“They took a look at the calendar for the next school year and have requested a modification,” said Ben Villarruel, superintendent. “That modification would be to have the winter recess start on Dec. 23, instead of Dec. 24, and then end the school year on June 8 rather than June 7.”

Full board action on the change could happen later this month.
