ASHWAUBENON – Brady Peer has been a scout since the first grade, when he joined Cub Scout Troop 4463 at Pioneer Elementary School.

Now a 15-year-old freshman at Ashwaubenon High School and a Life Scout member of Troop 1563, Peer is candidate for an Eagle Scout badge.

His project consists of three Leopold benches and a U-shaped raised bed at the Ashwaubenon Community Garden near Bill Diamond Fields at 2161 Collaer Court.

“I want to give people who don’t have a space to garden, or those who have physical limitations such as bending over, a place to grow their own produce and vegetables,” Peer said.

His favorite part is knowing he is helping his community.

The Ashwaubenon Community Garden consists of 50 plots that are rented to grow vegetables, he said.

Rex Mehlberg, Ashwaubenon director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, said the plots rent for $25 for the season.

All are rented out for 2019, except for Peer’s, which should be rented in the next week or two.

“We’ve had some great Eagle Scouts coming out of 1563,” said Mehlberg. “They’ve done a lot of great projects for us over the years. Brady did a nice job of planning it out. It was a pleasure working with him.”

Peer’s raised bed was installed on Saturday, April 20.

At least a dozen additional scouts and adults assisted with the installation.

Even with a project under his belt, Peer is not guaranteed the rank of Eagle Scout.

“There’s a lot of paperwork that I have to do and then I send that into the (Bay Lakes) Council (headquarters in Appleton) and then I have a meeting with them and then they decide if I’m worthy of earning it,” he said.

Eagle Scout status runs in the family. Brady’s maternal grandfather, Green Bay resident Terry Longrie, is also an Eagle Scout.

Once he completes high school, Brady plans to attend college to study law or he may join the U.S. Air Force.
