MADISON – The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team’s varsity boys’ squad had success at the State Sprint Championships Feb. 1-2 at Elver Park in Madison.
Ryan Thieme (Bay Port) became state champion in a close final heat over teammate Daniel Huhtala (Ashwaubenon) and Peak Nordic’s Noah Straka on the 1.1-kilometer course.
Kevin Johnson (Ashwaubenon) finished 10th.
Thieme paired with Johnson for an overall win in the varsity boys’ relay competition Feb. 1.
Mason Vinoski (Ashwaubenon) and Grant Rocheleau (Bay Port) finished third in the junior varsity relay race.
Huhtala and Kaitlyn Behm (Ashwaubenon) doubled poled to third in the varsity mixed relay.
Nick Swanson (Wrightstown) and Mia Miner (Ashwaubenon) were second in the JV mixed relay.
Behm finished 10th in the individual sprints for high school girls.
Sam Sharp (Parkview) overcame a fall but still finished fourth in the boys’ middle school final.
New this year at the sprints was a Norwegian ski development model for sprint heats.
Athletes continued to compete past the qualifying round and the racing field was sorted into championship and consolation brackets with semifinal and final heats.
Ashwaubenon’s boys improved their placements with Alex Lukens (Ashwaubenon) in 12th, Mason Vinoski 13th and Grant Rocheleau 14th in the final standings.
Freshman Joe Stumpf (Notre Dame Academy) moved up four places to 19th.
Swanson finished 33rd at the top of the consolation bracket.
Miner finished 29th for the high school girls.
