Arts commission seeks art for bus shelters

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Public Arts Commission (GBPAC) is doing what it can to brighten up the city – one bus shelter at a time.

The GBPAC is partnering with Green Bay Metro to bring local art to a selection of bus stop shelters around the city.

Public Arts Coordinator Laura Schley said the hope is to transform ordinary urban objects into something fun and unique, while at the same time giving local artists the opportunity to display their artwork.

“This program is intended to highlight, encourage and promote Green Bay artists by giving them the opportunity to present their artwork publicly,” Schley said.

From now until July 21, local artists can submit their artwork to the commission for possible placement on bus shelters.

Organizers are looking for images that reflect the unity and positivity of the Green Bay community – with preference giving to those pieces focusing on diversity and cultures within the community, Schley said.

This is the program’s first year, but is inspired by similar programs in Milwaukee and Madison.

Schley said submitted artwork needs to translate well to a bus shelter.

The design must cover back window panels and should account for the metal frame in between.

Chosen artists will each receive a licensing fee of $200 upon completion.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Schley at laurasc@greenbaywi.gov prior to submitting their artwork to discuss their application.

All applications must be received by midnight on July 21.

The final selections will be chosen by the City of Green Bay and members from Green Bay Metro, and announced in late July.
