Abstract art on display at the Neville

Posted

The Neville Public Museum’s Generations Gallery has updated its selection of art on display, shifting its focus to abstract art and featuring a collection of 45 pieces spanning from 1964 to 2021.

The pieces in the exhibit all come from the Neville’s expansive collection, which includes around 3,000 pieces of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.

“In working with all of our local community groups and especially our artists, we said, ‘We have art upstairs and its in storage, but we want to see more of it,” said Beth Kowalski, executive director at the Neville. “When we did the renovation of our core gallery in 2019 and 2020, we asked community stakeholders what they wanted to see in the space… The artist group said, ‘We want to see more of the permanent art collection.’ So this dedicated area — our arts area — has allowed us to do that. This is now the fourth rotation we’ve done. We try to do it annually and it’s based on what artists have suggested, so the subject matter for this year is abstract art.”

Previous themes on display in the Generations Gallery have included portraiture, nature and illustration.

With the focus now on abstract art, Kowalski said the gallery now features some of the museum’s more contemporary pieces.

“You’re looking at a range of about 70 years, but it’s artists that some are still alive…” she said. “They’re practicing right now. Art is around us all the time and we have a really rich art community here.”

Not only does the exhibit aim to highlight art and artists in the community, but Kowalski said she hopes the theme of abstract art encourages viewers to give art a try themselves.

“We hope it just inspires and people go home or families go home and are like, “Wow, look at that. We can create that or do something like that,’” she said.
