BROWN COUNTY – Each year, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, which was established by Herb Kohl in 1990, selects recipients for its Student Excellence Scholarship, Initiative Scholarship, Teacher Fellowship and Principal Leadership Award.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $28.3 million to Wisconsin students, educators and principals.
The statewide selection committee is composed of civic leaders, representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co-sponsors.
Student Excellence Scholarship
Recipients of the Student Excellence Scholarship are selected by a statewide committee for their excellence both in and out of the academic arena.
They display a high motivation to achieve and are involved in a broad range of activity and leadership roles outside the academic setting.
The selection committee said recipients show strong promise for succeeding in college and other future endeavors.
Each selected recipient will be awarded $10,000.
Local recipients of the 2022 Student Excellence Scholarship include:
• William Dwyer, De Pere High School
• Lakshman Mallele, Ashwaubenon High School
• Meghan Morgan, Pulaski High School
• Giselle Rottier, Pulaski High School
• Janani Sampath, De Pere High School
Initiative Scholarship
Initiative Scholarship recipients are selected by their schools.
Students selected to receive this scholarship have faced and overcome significant obstacles or adversity while demonstrating exceptional initiative in the classroom.
These students have not yet been selected for other academic-based scholarships, but demonstrate promise for success in college and beyond.
Students selected for this award will also each receive $10,000.
Local recipients of the 2022 Initiative Scholarship are:
• Maximus Christenson, Dr. Rosa Minoka-Hill School
• Paul Johnson, Bay City Christian School
• Ava Remitz, John Dewey Academy of Learning
In addition to these student awards, the program also recognized teachers and principals.
Teacher Fellowship
A statewide committee selects educators as Teacher Fellowship recipients.
These educators have demonstrated an ability to inspire a love of learning in their students and motivate others. They also show great leadership and service both in and out of the classroom.
Tera Wildenberg, a second grade teacher at Holy Cross Catholic School, was selected as a 2022 Teacher Fellow.
She will be awarded $6,000.
Principal Leadership Award
Recipients of the Principal Leadership Award are selected by a statewide committee and are chosen for their high standards for instruction, achievement and character.
They have also created a climate to best serve students, families, staff and community.
Crystal Blahnik, principal of St. Bernard Catholic School, was selected as a 2022 Principal Leader, and will receive $6,000.
