Leslie (Vidas) Zuehlke – Artist Angle

Medium/Art Form: Visual

When and how did you start making art?
Since I was a child, actually, but I began actively practicing and showing work since 1996.

What inspires your work?
My degree focused on figure work and color theory. In recent years, I have gravitated towards images that evoke emotion, the juxtaposition of mental/physical/emotional health issues.

How would you describe Green Bay/NE Wisconsin’s arts community?
I reside in the Appleton area and have shown in Green Bay some years ago. I am revisiting the Green Bay market specifically because of the progressive ideas that have emerged since the onset of the pandemic and the refresh of my own work since then as well.

What is the best advice you have for other artists?
Not to compare oneself to others. Studying others and drawing inspiration from the work of others is important, but don’t allow oneself to be intimidated or feel subordinated by other artists’ work; by the same token, one shouldn’t display arrogance or superiority toward another artist regardless of their skill level or expression. The journey and processes are different for each person. Each of us has a story.

Where can people find your work?
Current work is located at Mud N Prints, Appleton; Art Garage, Green Bay (being installed); upcoming shows at Kavanaugh Gallery/The Fine Line, St Charles, IL; Wisconsin Visual Artists/Perspectives 2023 (upcoming), Thelma Sadoff Center, Fond du Lac; artworkarchive.com/profile/leslie-vidas; portalwisconsin.org/online_gallery_artist.cfm?artist=1211&sort=medium&medid=15; and legaleriste.com/en/leslievidaszuehlke
