GREEN BAY ­­ – The Green Bay women’s basketball team received a career-high 19 points from Maddy Schreiber and defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 70-60 at the Kress Events Center Wednesday night.

The Phoenix win is the fourth in a row over the Badgers. The Phoenix (6-3, 1-1 HL) had three players score in double figures. Bailey Butler added 15 points and six rebounds, while Sydney Levy had 13 points.

Wisconsin (4-9, 0-2 Big Ten) was led by the duo of Julie Pospislova and Brooke Schramek, who combined for 34 points.
“We did a really good job, for the most part, getting hands on the shooters toward the end,” said head coach Kevin Borseth after the game.
“It’s a great win,” said Schreiber postgame. “Obviously, we’re going to enjoy it tonight, but like coach said, we’ll get back at it tomorrow. I wouldn’t be able to do it without my teammates, honestly. I wouldn’t be the player that I am.”

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay scored the first four points of the game, but Wisconsin scored the following eight points to double up the Phoenix at 8-4 five minutes into the game. A tough GB defense held Bucky to three points for the remainder of the quarter, and Jasmine Kondrakiewicz scored four points in 43 seconds to help the Phoenix close the gap at 11-10 to end the quarter in favor of Wisconsin.

A Natalie McNeal jumper to lead off the quarter gave GB a momentary lead, but Wisconsin responded with a 10-2 run to open up a seven-point advantage at the 6:54 mark. Schreiber then put the Phoenix on her back, scoring 12 second-quarter points and giving Green Bay a slim 29-28 lead at the half.

After intermission, the Badgers added four early points and held a 33-32 lead with 8:30 to go. It was their last lead of the game, with Schreiber, McNeal, Butler, Julia Hartwig, and Callie Genke all finding the basket during the quarter. GB held Bucky scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter and banked a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 44-38.

The stingy Phoenix defensive effort carried over, as Wisconsin did not score until more than two minutes into the fourth quarter. In that time, the Phoenix tacked on six more points to extend their lead to twelve. A successful and-one by Genke with 5:37 to go gave GB a thirteen-point lead, its biggest of the game. With the gap sitting at ten with just over a minute to go, the Badgers turned to fouling, and the Phoenix sunk nine of twelve charity stripe attempts down the stretch to ice the win.
