The Scene

The Alpena passes the Bart Starr Memorial Bridge on Nov. 8 and was scheduled to depart on Nov. 9.

Originally built in 1942 as the SS Leon Fraser, the Alpena is the last of five identical ships built during World War II to haul iron ore and is the oldest active steamship on the Great Lakes.
