Green Bay beat Marist for first victory

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay women’s basketball team responded after a season-opening loss to Drake by thrashing Marist 74-45 in the regular-season home opener on Nov. 12.
The Phoenix (1-1, 0-0 Horizon League) had three players score in double figures, led by Hailey Oskey’s 19 points, six rebounds and three steals. She finished 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and did all of her work in just 25 minutes. Cassie Schiltz tacked on 11 points and Tatum Koenig helped out with 10 points off the bench.
Green Bay utilized fantastic ball movement in the game, piling up 15 assists on 27 made field goals. Individually, Bailey Butler dished out the most for the Phoenix with three.
Maeve Donnelly led the Red Foxes (0-3, 0-0 MAAC) with 13 points. She was the only Marist player to reach double digits in the scoring column.
After playing to a 10-10 tie early in the game, Green Bay went on a 9-2 run in the final 5:30 of the first quarter, highlighted by a Jasmine Kondrakiewicz triple to take a 19-10 lead. The lone Marist basket went to Donnelly, who paced the Red Foxes with six of their 12 points in the opening quarter.
The Phoenix kept its distance from Marist in the second quarter, holding a double-digit lead for all but 57 seconds. Oskey filled the stat sheet, pulling down five rebounds, tallying two points and one steal. Her effort helped Green Bay take a 28-21 advantage into intermission.
Marist came out of the break aggressively and pulled to within six after Julianna Bonilla drilled a 3-pointer with 8:38 to go in the third quarter. Brooklyn Blackburn and Maddy Schreiber would help the Phoenix answer, with the former knocking down two shots inside the arc. Schreiber grabbed a rebound and took it coast-to-coast, giving the Phoenix a 34-24 lead. Green Bay scored 10 points in the final 2:28 of the frame, pulling away for a 19-point lead going into the final quarter.

Tatum Koenig had a strong fourth, tallying six points (all from the charity stripe), one assist and one rebound. Green Bay led by 21 or more for the final 8:35 of the quarter and outscored Marist 46-24 in the second half.
Green Bay will travel to Saint Louis on Friday, Nov. 18.
