Port of Green Bay shipping on pace with 2021

GREEN BAY – More than halfway through the 2022 shipping season, cargo shipments through the Port of Green Bay have totaled more than 1.1 million tons, down slightly from the same period last year.

The latest tonnage totals show that imports of limestone, petroleum products and coal continue to lead the way.

Cargo shipments in August hit 280,224 tons; an increase over July but down from the August 2021 total of more than 333,000 tons.

“Like most shipping seasons, we are seeing some ups and downs in the monthly shipping of commodities through the Port,” said Port Director Dean Haen. “With another four months of cargo traffic on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system, we remain cautiously optimistic we will hit our annual target of 2 million tons of cargo.”

More than 84,000 tons of limestone were imported to the Port in August, bringing the year-to-date total to 365,930 tons.

That’s down about 7% from 2021.

Imports of petroleum products in August reached 61,459, bringing the year-to-date total to 171,660 tons.
Meanwhile, just more than 5,000 tons of petroleum products were exported in August.

Nearly 34,000 tons of coal moved into the Port in August.

For the year, coal shipments have reached 108,821 tons, up 84% from the same period last year.
A total of 24 ships, including five Canadian vessels, moved through the Port in August.

For the year, ship visits have reached 98, compared to 103 through the end of August in 2021.
The Port of Green Bay is the western-most port on Lake Michigan.

It has 14 active terminal operators located along three miles of the Fox River.
