Lukas Compton, bartender for two years at Highland Howie’s Pub & Grill on Humboldt Road on Green Bay’s east side, grew up in a household that spoke German.
Originally from Racine, his mother spoke broken German and his three aunts spoke fluently.
“Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch (I speak a little bit of German),” Compton said.
Behind the bar, however, it’s his fluency in comic books and other niche topics that serve him best. “I speak most nerd languages,” Compton said with a laugh.
“I speak comic book, I speak Harry Potter and Star Wars… Dungeons and Dragons.”
After seven years total in the service industry, Compton said he’s learned that tending bar isn’t necessarily about mixing drinks.
“It’s actually just about entertaining people, and that seems to work for me,” he said.
