Spring: Busy time for nature groups, field trips

By Press Times Staff

BROWN COUNTY – Spring is a busy time of year.

Animals become more active as they end their months-long hibernations, plants start to push shoots above ground peeking out for sunlight, trees become filled with the sounds of birds returning from their seasonal migrations and in the world of Wisconsin conservation, groups come together to discuss all things nature as they gear up for another busy spring.

Annual banquets

Two of Northeast Wisconsin’s local environmental organizations are sponsoring banquets open to anyone interested in nature.

The Clean Water Action Council is holding its annual banquet at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the Riverside Ballroom.

This year’s banquet speaker will be naturalist, speaker and author John Bates.

Bates has written many books on Wisconsin’s natural world including: “Our Living Ancestors: History and Ecology of Old Growth Forests,” “Graced by the Seasons Cold to the Bone,” a poetry book written by John and his wife, Mary, “River Life: The Natural and Cultural History of a Northern River” and his most recent book, “Wisconsin Wild Lakes: A Guide to Wisconsin’s Last Undeveloped Natural Lakes,” which he will have copies of at the banquet.

To register for the banquet go to the CWAC website at www.cleanwateractioncouncil.org.

The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation (BCPF) will hold its annual banquet at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Rock Garden.

The speaker for this year’s banquet will be Charlie Frisk, local naturalist, author and BCPF President.

Frisk will speak on the history of the Baird Creek Valley and the Baird Creek Preservation Foundation.

To sign up, go to the BCPF website at bairdcreek.org/.

Field trips

With so much happening in the natural world during the spring, a good one way to participate in it is to join an organized field trip with leaders who know the best places to go, and the expertise to show you things you would not see on your own.

The Bay Area Bird Club provides hikes at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary every spring to catch the best of the migration, particularly of the warblers.

Hikes are open to the public, and start at 6:30 a.m. on:

• Wednesday, April 27

• Saturday, April 30

• Wednesday, May 4

• Saturday, May 7

• Wednesday, May 11

• Saturday, May 14

• Wednesday, May 18

Those interested in learning even more can become a member of the Bay Area Bird Club for $15.

Members receive the club’s newsletter, “The Chickadee,” as well as notification about all field trips, meetings, speakers and other events.

To join, mail a check to: BABC c/o Jim Johnson, 2652 Danbar Drive, Green Bay, WI 54313.

Another organization providing regular field trips is the Baird Creek Preservation Foundation.

Upcoming hikes include:

• 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at Christa McAuliffe Park – The History of the Baird Creek Valley, led by Frisk.

• 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30 at Triangle Hill Park – Earth Month Clean Up: clean up garbage, remove invasive species, plant native plants.
