New United Way board members

BROWN COUNTY โ€“ Brown County United Way has elected two new local community leaders โ€“ Jeff Rafn, president of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and Julie Marthaler, vice president of Underwriting and Performance Excellence at CONNECT โ€“ to serve on its board of directors for a three-year term.

The role of the board of directors is to provide visioning, direction setting and results accountability.

Fire causes $50,000 in damages

DE PERE โ€“ The De Pere Fire Rescue Department responded to a structure fire on South Sixth Street April 8.ย 

Battalion Chief Brett Jansen said crews arrived on scene within minutes and extinguished the fully-engulfed garage quickly, preventing the fire from extending inside the house.

Jansen said the garage, as well as the vehicle inside it, were a complete loss, with moderate damage to the outside of the house.

The estimated damage is approximately $50,000.

Witnesses said a wood-burning heating unit in use inside the garage caused the fire.

Fire units were on scene for about three hours.

Jansen said one firefighter who sustained minor burns was treated on scene and released.

DMV releases redesigned Golf Wisconsin license plates

WISCONSIN โ€“ The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently released the new design of its Golf Wisconsin license plate.ย 

This plate supports golf in Wisconsin through an annual $25 tax-deductible contribution to the Wisconsin Professional Golfers Association (WPGA) Junior Foundation and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

The old plates will be discontinued.

Golf Wisconsin license plates must be ordered online or by mail.

Plates will be mailed to the customer.

On Broadway purchases Old Fort Square

GREEN BAY โ€“ On Broadway, Inc. recently announced the purchase of Old Fort Square at 211 N. Broadway as the next step in the development of the Green Bay Public Market.

On Broadway staff said it continues to meet with prospective tenants for the multi-million dollar planned development.

The Green Bay Public Market Facebook and Instagram pages are now both active and will begin producing content for the public.

Janssen named OHP clinical directorย

GREEN BAY โ€“ Tracy Janssen was recently named as Oral Health Partnershipโ€™s (OHP) new clinical director.

In her new role, Janssen will provide support to clinic staff, assure a high quality of patient care, maintain efficient clinical operations and occasionally work with patients in the clinic.

OHP also announced the hiring of Zach Johnson as the human resources business partner.

Johnson will recruit and hire team members, administer employee benefits and manage occupational health, safety training and development.

Oral Health Partnership is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the oral health of underserved children in the Brown County community by providing dental services and education.

Leaf collection starting in Green Bay

GREEN BAY โ€“ The City of Green Bay Public Works Department will begin its spring curbside collection of loose leaves, garden waste and grass clippings on Monday, April 18.ย 

Materials should be placed on the curb in separate piles (leaves/grass together and brush/branches together) and should not be commingled.

Bagged or commingled material will not be picked up.

Final collection will take place May 8.

BCUW announced plans for neighborhood community house

GREEN BAY โ€“ Brown County United Way (BCUW) and U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced plans for a Neighborhood Community House, the first of its kind in Green Bay, designed to help the residents of four near east-side neighborhoods.

The project received a $1 million appropriation from the federal government, made possible in large part due to the support of Baldwin. BCUW officals envision the community house being a center for offering skills training in such areas as manufacturing, healthcare, social assistance and retail trade, as well as financial literacy, parenting, literacy education and mental health support.

The $1 million appropriation is the largest grant ever received by BCUW.

Summer school deadline extended

GREEN BAY โ€“ The Green Bay Area Public School District has extended its summer school enrollment deadline until April 25.

The Green Bay summer school program offers half- and full-day options for children in grades 4K-12.

4-H online art auction

WISCONSIN โ€“ The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation kicks off a week-long celebration of the arts with an online auction April 20-26 featuring the winning entries from the statewide 4-H art contest held last fall.

In total, 28 pieces featuring a variety of media โ€“ย  photography, painting, barn quilts, concert tickets and more โ€“ will be available for purchase during the event.

Newcap seeks young board members

WISCONSIN โ€“ Newcap is looking for two youth (under the age of 18) individuals who have been previously homeless or experienced homelessness first-hand to join its board of directors.

High school greenhouses opening soon

GREEN BAY โ€“ The Green Bay high schoolsโ€™ greenhouses will open in a matter of weeks.

Following a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students are back planting, watering and observing the wide variety of plants.

High school greenhouses open between May 6-9.

Plants for sale โ€“ including hanging baskets, begonias, tulips, geraniums, ornamental grasses, tomatoes, peppers and herbs โ€“ vary at each greenhouse.
