Incumbent Scannell facing Miller for Green Bay District 7

By Press Times Staff

GREEN BAY – The April 5 ballot is set for Green Bay City Council District 7.

Incumbent Randy Scannell will face challenger Rob Miller for the two-year term.

District 7 consists of part of Green Bay on both sides of the Fox River.

The Press Times emailed each candidate the same question and gave them each 200 words to respond.

What do you see as the most important issue facing the City of Green Bay and District 7, and if elected, how will you address it?

Randy Scannell

A: As a Green Bay city alder, coming out of COVID-19 is the most important issue facing us.

I want to get development projects slowed by the pandemic back on track, especially on Velp Avenue.

The city still has American Rescue Plan Act funds to distribute and be allocated wisely going forward.

We have to keep growing, and that means adopting policies to make our city attractive and accessible to diverse populations.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has loosened social standards, and we’ve seen a rise in inappropriate and dangerous behavior.

I will continue to support our police in their efforts to protect our community.

I support the ongoing need to provide more housing, in particular affordable housing, along with supporting the services that will reduce our homeless population.

The Build Back Better Act funds will also be available soon, and the decisions on how we use the money will be important.

Very soon, we should be taking major steps to address climate change by using green energy practices and moving to green infrastructure.

Many of our local industries are well on the path of green efficiency.

It’s time for the city and the rest of us to step up.

Rob Miller

A: The most important issue facing Green Bay is competence in government.

Green Bay has been deficient in performing some of the most basic functions of government – maintenance of roads, integrity of elections and public safety.

Green Bay pays the highest taxes in Brown County.

We are also the only entity with a wheel surtax.

Our roads and infrastructure should be the best in the county.

They are not.

I have requested the road rating data for the past eight years.

The aggregate ratings divided by the number of roads will show the general road state.

Graphed over time, the results will permit us to make informed choices about our street investments.

Fair elections are necessary to assure the citizens of the legitimacy of their government.

They should be, like a judicial proceeding, without any appearance of impropriety.

Demonizing and defunding a police department because of the wrongdoing of a small number of officers in this country is destructive and counterproductive.

Cities, such as Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, etc., have experienced dramatic increases in crime as a result.

We need to hire more officers and fully support the Green Bay Police Department.
