Incumbent Steuer faces Kuzma for Green Bay District 10

By Press Times Staff

GREEN BAY – The April 5 race for District 10 on the Green Bay City Council will feature five-term incumbent Mark Steuer against challenger Eric Kuzma.

District 10 covers portions of the city’s west side.

The Press Times emailed each candidate the same question and gave them 200 words to respond.

What do you see as the most important issue facing the City of Green Bay, and if elected, how will you address it?

Eric Kuzma

A: Affordable housing is the most important issue facing the people both in my district and the Greater Green Bay area.

It’s an issue that regularly comes up in my library, and it’s a common theme when talking with my constituents.

It’s an issue that cuts across so many different groups – the young, the elderly and the poor, as well as the middle class.

There’s an affordable housing shortage in our area, and this is contributing to homelessness and driving home costs through the roof. It’s a serious situation, and there’s a lot that the Common Council can do.

Let’s look at zoning and ordinances in order to develop more affordable housing.

Mark Steuer

A: Lately, the most pressing issue I am dealing with is citizen safety, specifically in seeing an increase in gun violence and speeding traffic.

The recent drive-by shooting on Hubbard Street is within a block of District 10.

I ended up walking the area soon after the incident, and asked the neighboring citizens for their recollections and ideas for moving forward.

I also visited with a few dozen concerned citizens at the police station and listened to their concerns and ideas as well.

Within days, there was a citizen symposium at the Neville Museum with many citizens and other city officials.

The ability to listen to citizens on this matter is an important aspect of being a city alder.

The ability to do research with police, inspection and other involved departments on this in order to find viable solutions is extremely important.

I ask if the situation is drug-related, gang-related or something else.

Then the root causes can be addressed.

With speeding, the council recently added two traffic officers to deal with speeding, rolling stops, failures to stop and such.

The police just produced a traffic study report dealing with these and other traffic concerns, of which I study and utilize.
