Green Bay women unable to keep pace with Cleveland State

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s basketball team had a tough shooting outing Monday afternoon, falling 69-42 to Cleveland State at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in the Horizon League Semifinals.

Sydney Levy led the Phoenix with eight points.

Cassie Schiltz and Maddy Schreiber chipped in with seven apiece.

Cleveland State shot 48.1% from the floor and 50% from 3-point range.

The Vikings’ offense was humming, despite their leading scorer, Destiny Leo, only scoring five points.

How it happened

Neither team scored in the game’s first two minutes and 25 seconds until Cleveland State’s Isabelle Gradwell made a pair of free throws that started a 7-2 Vikings run.

Schreiber made a three to make it 7-5, but the Vikings responded with another run, this time 10-2 to take a 17-7 lead into the quarter break.

Cleveland State built a 26-9 advantage before Green Bay went on an 8-0 run to narrow its deficit to 26-17.

The Phoenix trailed 32-19 after halftime.

The lead ballooned to 41-24 before Green Bay went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Levy, to trim its deficit to 41-30 with 2:58 to go in the third.

The Vikings stretched the lead to 47-34 heading into the fourth.

The Phoenix knocked down three 3-pointers in the quarter to score nine of their 15 total points.

Cleveland State outscored Green Bay 22-8 in the fourth quarter.

Game notes 

» Green Bay tied a season-high in 3-point attempts, shooting 33 times from behind the arc, making four of them.
» The Green Bay bench made an impact by adding 20 points to its scoring output.
» The Green Bay defense forced 17 turnovers, committing 14 of its own.
» Green Bay got a team-high five rebounds from Schiltz.
» Green Bay never got going offensively, finishing 17-of-58 (29.3%) from the field.
» The Vikings outscored Green Bay n the paint, 30-16.
