Early morning ice rescue in De Pere

By Press Times Staff

DE PERE – Just shy of 7 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, De Pere Fire Rescue units were dispatched to an area near the Claude Allouez Bridge for a report of an individual who went through the ice.

Battalion Chief Tom Nelson said two teams were deployed, one from St. Norbert’s College and the other from Front Street, and immediately deployed the rapid deployment craft onto the ice.

He said a male victim was located within minutes of deployment and pulled from the ice, and lifesaving efforts began.

Nelson said the patient was transported to a local hospital and his condition unknown.

He cautioned that no ice is 100% safe, and encourages everyone to wear a personal flotation device and check the ice regularly before venturing out.
