Structure fire in De Pere causes extensive damage

By Press Times Staff

DE PERE – Two De Pere families are without a home today, following a structure fire Wednesday night.

At approximately 6:24 p.m Jan. 26, De Pere Fire Rescue Department units were dispatched to 833 Ash St. in the City of De Pere for a report of a structure fire, with occupants possibly trapped.

Battalion Chief Jack Mlnarik said firefighters arrived within minutes and found smoke and fire venting out of the upper and lower unit windows of a two-story, apartment complex.

De Pere police units on scene confirmed all four occupants got safely out of the structure prior to their arrival.

Mlnarik said one occupant from the upper unit was injured during the evacuation process and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.

After entering the structure to begin extinguishing the fire, Mlnarik said fire conditions forced firefighters to exit and conducted from the outside.

Mlnarik said firefighters found the blaze had already extended into the attic of the structure, and the numerous building modifications made it problematic for fire crews.

He said the extremely cold temperatures only made efforts that much more difficult.

Fire units were on scene for approximately five hours and dealt with extremely icy conditions and brutally-cold temperatures throughout.

Mlnarik said because of the extremely cold temperatures, fire units from Lawrence, Hobart, Ashwaubenon,  Morrison, Green Bay and Denmark assisted with the incident.

There were no firefighter injuries reported during the incident.

Mlnarik said the Brown County Fire Investigation Team is actively investigating the cause of the fire, and both the upper and lower units sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage.
