Birds of Prey tour

GREEN BAY – The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a Birds of Prey tour from 1-2 p.m. Jan. 23.

Tours start outside the Observation Building.

Participants can meet in the lobby following the tour for an up-close look at some of the sanctuary’s resident birds of prey.

Virtual snowman contest

DE PERE – City residents can show off their snow creation skills in a family-friendly snowman contest now through Feb. 28.

All photos will be posted on Facebook, and the three creations with the most likes will win prizes.

Parks, Recreation and Forestry staff, along with Mayor James Boyd, will choose an honorable mention prize.

Winners will be contacted March 1.

Kavarna named one of the best in the country

GREEN BAY – Kavarna Coffeehouse, in Green Bay’s Broadway District, has been named one of the best in the United States, according to Tasting Table, a national website for culinary enthusiasts.

In a list of best of in each state, Kavarna was highlighted as the best coffee shops in Wisconsin.

“It’s also one of the best spots in Green Bay to find vegetarian and vegan food, not an easy feat when you’re in the heart of America’s Dairyland,” the review reads.

30-day deployment extended

GREEN BAY – The U.S. Navy team supporting Bellin Memorial Hospital will stay an additional 30 days after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently accepted Bellin’s application for an extension of its service.

The 23-person team, which arrived at Bellin Dec. 28, is now scheduled to depart at the end of February.

“The Navy’s assistance during this incredibly busy time has been invaluable, and their support remains critical as we continue to navigate the current COVID-19 surge,” Laura Hieb, Bellin Health chief nursing officer and senior vice president, said.

State of Broadway District

GREEN BAY – On Broadway, Inc. will be hosting its annual State of the Broadway District at 8 a.m. (doors open at 7:30 a.m.) Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Announcements regarding new developments, the Shipyard, Railyard, Broadway District vision, volunteer recognition awards and more will be made.

The community is invited to attend in person or virtually.

Registration will open soon for both options.

New meat senior director

GREEN BAY – Skogen’s Festival Foods announced the appointment of Jeff Bruce as the grocer’s meat senior director.

Bruce has more than 20 years of retail experience, primarily in fresh food leadership with Safeway Foods, where he led multiple meat and seafood departments in Idaho and Washington.

New BayCare Clinic partner

GREEN BAY – Dr. John Awowale has been named a physician partner at BayCare Clinic.

Awowale joined the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine BayCare Clinic in 2019 as an orthopedic surgeon.

He sees patients in Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay and Marinette.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

There are 98 physician partners at BayCare Clinic.

Cellcom scholarship applications

GREEN BAY – The online application for Cellcom scholarships is now open.

This year, Cellcom will award 16 scholarships in the amount of $750 to graduating high school seniors across its service area.

Applicants must reside within a county in Wisconsin or Michigan where Cellcom operates and be planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or technical school.

Applications are due March 15.

‘Carrie The Musical’

DE PERE – Knight Theatre, St. Norbert College’s (SNC) student-run theatre group, will present “Carrie the Musical,” by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals Co., Jan. 27-30.

Performances will be held at the Webb Theatre in the Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts on the SNC campus.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinee performances will be at 2 p.m.

Masks are required for all indoor events.

Tickets may be purchased at the SNC box office by calling 920-403-3950 or online at snc.edu/tickets.

Reserved seats for the public are $15.

‘Freezin’ for a Reason’

WISCONSIN – Thousands of Special Olympics Wisconsin supporters from across the state can be “Freezin’ for a Reason” this February and March for the 2022 Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Wisconsin.

This year’s event also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI).

Both in-person and at-home options are available.

In-person events statewide, include:

• Feb. 5 – Ridges Golf Course, Wisconsin Rapids

• Feb. 12 – Menominee Park, Oshkosh

• Feb. 19 – Olin Park, Madison

• Feb. 19 – City Beach, Oconomowoc

Winter wonders at the garden

GREEN BAY – The thousands of flowers at the Green Bay Botanical Garden may be covered with a few inches of snow, but staff said there is still much to enjoy.

The garden is celebrating the winter season from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, with a special event.

Winter Celebration, a free event featuring self-guided, outdoor activities, including:

• Explore the outdoors and discover intriguing winter facts.

• Uncover winter surprises on a scavenger hunt.

• Try your skills at snowshoeing (ages six and up, pending snow).

 A take-home a craft kit (while supplies last)

Preble interim principal

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay School District announced Bruce Russell will serve as Preble High School’s interim principal for the remainder of the 2021-22 school year.

District representatives said after teaching for several years, Russell transitioned into administration serving as an associate principal in Tomah.

He went on to serve as principal at Oconto Falls High School until he retired in 2018.

Since his retirement, Russell has assisted several Northeast Wisconsin school districts serving as an interim high school principal.

Communications Director Lori Blakeslee said the district has already begun a search for a permanent principal, and said the goal is to announce a new principal for Preble High School this spring.

South Bay Marina recertified

GREEN BAY – South Bay Marina, located at the mouth of the Fox River and Bay of Green Bay, has officially recertified as a Wisconsin Clean Marina.

The marina has been a part of the program since 2010.

“Recertifying as a clean marina allows us to take a step back and reexamine ourselves and make sure we are where we need to be and if we are not, then make the improvements to get us there,” Operations Manager Joe Lorge said.

The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program was launched in 2010, and 22 Wisconsin marinas have since taken steps to voluntarily adopt practices to become certified.

Urban Hub updates

GREEN BAY – Over the last few months, the Urban Hub has undergone a variety of amenity updates, including:

• A full-stocked kitchen, including fridge, microwave and Keurig coffee maker.

• Presentation space with an 86-inch LG presentation screen, dual blind spot attendee monitors, a confidence monitor for presenter, and a full presentation system including up to six microphones for panel discussions.

The upgrades aren’t the only changes.

Patrick Stumpf, communications manager for the Greater Green Bay Chamber, which operates the hub, said non-members are now able to book these resources for their events of up to 60 people.

Museum survey

BROWN COUNTY – For the third year, the Neville Public Museum is participating in a national survey of museum-goers, sponsored by the American Alliance of Museums. 

All survey responses are kept confidential.

Summer academy of medicine

DE PERE – The Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay (MCW) and St. Norbert College (SNC) are partnering to offer two Summer Academy of Medicine experiences June 14-17 and June 21-24.

During each three-and-a-half-day program, students will have the opportunity to explore careers in medicine and the biomedical sciences and engage in hands-on learning.

The programs are open to students entering their junior or senior year of high school.

The cost is $800 per participant and includes meals, snacks, housing and evening activities. 

A limited number of scholarships are available.

Pollinator habitat along East River Trail

LEDGEVIEW – The Town of Ledgeview recently received a second $5,000 grant from American Transmission Co.’s (ATC) Pollinator Habitat Program to increase pollinator habitat at Ledgeview Park along the East River Trail.

“We had such success with our 2021 project, we wanted to continue to develop pollinator habitats throughout Ledgeview Park… to continue to create beautiful habitat for bees, birds, butterflies and other pollinators.,” Stephanie Schlag, Park and Recreation director, said.
