Ambidextrous Blount excels in two sports

Josh Blount, a 2021 West De Pere graduate now playing baseball at Division I Illinois State University, shined in two sports in high school – football and baseball.

Blount was the quarterback on the football team throwing right-handed and starred on the baseball diamond throwing with his left hand.

Rockers host families make season possible

The Sarosiek family – Ted, Jen and Josephine – completed its fifth season hosting Green Bay Rockers baseball players last season.

Hosting players when the team was the Bullfrogs and Booyah, the Sarosieks make the transition for players easier by providing food and a place to sleep.

Opening Day at Capital Credit Union Park in Ashwaubenon is at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, against Wisconsin Rapids.

Bornick shines in state semifinals

Then-senior James Bornick belted two home runs and a triple in Bay Port’s 9-3 victory June 25 over West Bend East in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 state quarterfinal baseball game.

After beating Eau Claire Memorial in the semis 8-1, the Pirates lost to Sun Prairie in the championship game, 11-2.

Phantoms stun Jaguars

In a Sept. 3 football game, West De Pere beat Ashwaubenon, 14-13.

Bryce Smith’s 37-yard field goal with no time remaining lifted the Phantoms to the dramatic win.

De Pere wins FRCC title

For the first time since 2015, the De Pere football team won the Fox River Classic Conference title.

The Redbirds finished 6-0 in conference and advanced to the WIAA Division 2 state quarterfinals before falling to Hartford in overtime, 43-42.

25 years later: 1996 Ashwaubenon state title

Twenty-five years after winning the WIAA Division 2 state football title, The Press Times looked back on Ashwaubenon’s improbable run.

The Jaguars had to win their final two regular-season games to qualify for the playoffs.

Ashwaubenon then beat Plymouth, Portage and Pulaski in successive order in the playoffs before earning a game against national powerhouse Menomonie in the state semifinals.

After a 21-20 victory over the Mustangs, the Jaguars cruised to a 29-8 victory over Monroe in the championship game for the program’s first state title.

Preble junior commits to Pac-12

Ashley Wolfe, a junior at Green Bay Preble, recently verbally committed to play Division I softball at Oregon State University, a member of the Pacific-12 Conference.

Wolfe batted .588 (50-for-85), scored 53 runs, cranked 22 doubles and eight home runs and knocked in 31 runs for the Hornets, who lost in the WIAA Division 1 sectional finals last season.

Local family kicks cancer to the diamond

Then-sophomore Morgan Hansel, a catcher on the West De Pere softball team, dealt with her step-father battling Stage IV prostate cancer last season.

Six months later, Phil Resch is in remission, with no evidence of the disease currently detected.

From start to finish, Resch battled his cancer for about three years and eight months.

Naval roots run deep for Meeuwsen family

Max Meeuwsen, a 2020 Bay Port graduate, recently completed his sophomore season playing football at the Naval Academy.

Max’s father, Ben, played for the Midshipmen in the late 80s.

Max’s brother, Quinn, served in the Navy from 2015-19.

The Midshipmen finished the season 4-8 but beat Army Dec. 11, 17-13.

De Pere/West De Pere football rivalry

Playing for the first time since 2006, De Pere beat West De Pere in a Sept. 24 football game, 21-16.

The schools are separated by 2.4 miles and the Fox River.

De Pere quarterback Gabe Herman accounted for 143 yards of total offense.
