Avery Dudra, a senior at Bay Port, recently finished 10th as an individual at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 State Golf Tournament at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona.

The Pirates qualified for team state each of her four years on the team.

Dudra said she loves to play par-5s with a waterfall as the backdrop.

She said she’d like to be professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau for a day and hit a 400-yard drive.

A double eagle or a hole-in-one?

“A hole-in-one.”

What’s your most embarrassing golf moment?

“It was during a shotgun start, and I couldn’t find my start hole. I walked to the opposite side of the course, only to realize I was nowhere close to where I needed to be.”

Talk about Head Coach Jeff Johnsen.

“Coach has done wonders for our team. When he first started as coach, there were only nine girls in the program. Five years later, we had 24 and a healthy list of accolades under our belt. He puts in lots of time and effort. He drove us around the state to compete with the best teams. Anyone who spends 10 minutes talking to him can see how he cares for the girls.”

Thoughts on the Ryder Cup?

“It was awesome. Wisconsin has a good golf scene with the Kohler courses. The tournament had a large influence in the golf community, which will bring more people to Wisconsin to see what it has to offer.”

Talk about your family.

“They stress the importance of focusing on things that make you happy in life. This, combined with the support my family has given me throughout my high school career, has allowed me the opportunity to flourish in golf.”

What’s your favorite recovery shot of all time?

“It was at the 2020 Fox River Classic Conference Championship where I had to remove my shoes and roll up my pants to hit a ball out of the water. It came off the club perfectly and went onto the green.”

What are your hobbies?

“Outside of golf, I like to work out, hang with friends and watch my sister play sports.”

What three words describe you?

“Determined, goofy, reliable.”

The British Open or the PGA Championship?

“The British Open.”

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

“I like 90s R&B music.”

Who’s your favorite golfer?

“Collin Morikawa. He’s a younger player who has seen lots of success within the first couple of years turning pro. Almost always, it’s the younger players who attract new people to golf. The presence of a player like Morikawa, who has had so much success early in his career, will attract lots of different people to the game.”

Which do you dislike more – playing from the trees or five-inch rough?

“Playing from the trees.”

What are two things you’ll miss about Bay Port?

“Though Bay Port is a bigger school, it was easy to make relationships with the teachers and the other students. Also, I’ll miss driving to the course after school to hang with my teammates and coach for a couple of hours.”

What’s your ideal foursome on the golf course?

“Adam Sandler, James Corden, Phil Mickelson and myself.”

What are your college aspirations?

“I’m looking to attend a college that offers a robust engineering program. I haven’t decided whether I’ll also be going somewhere for athletics.”

A 33 for nine holes or a 74 for 18?

“I would prefer a 33 for nine holes.”

What other sport would you have liked to try?

“Hockey.”
