MILWAUKEE – Making its ninth appearance at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Boys’ Soccer Tournament, De Pere saw its magical run to a state championship end in defeat Nov. 4.
Behind a pair of first-half goals, No. 1-seeded Marquette University (22-2-1) defeated the No. 4-seeded Redbirds 3-0 at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee in the Division 1 state semifinals.
Marquette’s Owen Marshall scored two goals – one in the 27th minute and the other in the 29th minute – in the first half to give the Hilltoppers the lead.
Nick Magner scored the third goal in the 50th minute for the Hilltoppers to end the scoring.
Goalie Evan Engel had 10 saves in net for the Redbirds (13-8-2), who managed only two shots on the goal during the game.
De Pere came into the contest winners of five straight, including wins over Green Bay East, Bay Port, Sussex Hamilton and Green Bay Preble.
